Xiaoze Xie
March 16 - April 20, 2002
The Silent Flow of Daily Life continues in Charles Cowles
Gallery's exhibition of Xiaoze Xie's new paintings. A primary
theme in Xie's oeuvre is history; he takes both specific events
and their record in books and newspapers as his subjects. Sensuously
painted stacks of newspapers are immortalized during their fleeting
tenure on library shelves. These ubiquitous objects are the messengers
for critical regional and world news, but are also daily made obsolete
by their successors.
Beautifully painted, Xiaoze Xie's works are based on the
photographs he takes in libraries. Ranging from crisply clear piles of
papers with legible headlines to abstract close-ups of bookbindings, he
renders printed matter with an exquisite compositional sense. His
palette ranges from warm to cool, but is far from the over-bright
fluorescent lighting found in most academic reading rooms.
