Xiaoze Xie

New Paintings
March 16 - April 20, 2002

The Silent Flow of Daily Life continues in Charles Cowles Gallery's exhibition of XIAOZE XIE's new paintings. A primary theme in XIE's oeuvre is history; he takes both specific events and their record in books and newspapers as his subjects. Sensuously painted stacks of newspapers are immortalized during their fleeting tenure on library shelves. These ubiquitous objects are the messengers for critical regional and world news, but are also daily made obsolete by their successors.

Beautifully painted, XIAOZE XIE's works are based on the photographs he takes in libraries. Ranging from crisply clear piles of papers with legible headlines to abstract close-ups of bookbindings, he renders printed matter with an exquisite compositional sense. His palette ranges from warm to cool, but is far from the over-bright fluorescent lighting found in most academic reading rooms.

Born in P.R. China, XIAOZE XIE received his MFA from University of North Texas, Denton, TX, in 1996. This exhibition is his first solo show in New York. XIE's work is included in distinguished public collections including the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, TX, and Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art, AZ. XIE currently teaches at Bucknell University, Lewisburg, PA.

The exhibition will be on view at the Charles Cowles Gallery, 537 West 24th Street, between 10th and 11th Avenues in Chelsea. Hours are 10am to 6pm, Tuesday through Saturday.

There will be a reception for the artist on Thursday, March 14 from 6-8 pm.
