DARREN WATERSTON's new work delves deeper into the abstract themes and horizonless landscapes he has been developing in recent years. Focusing on the atmospheric qualities always prevalent in his paintings, these works abandon the earlier figural vignettes in favor of ostensibly non-representational motifs that float through the compositions. His deftly rendered details mix with expressionistic strokes and drips to give the viewer a window into an elemental universe. The space he evokes is fluid and achieved by the delicate layering of oil glazes.
WATERSTON explores the visceral both in palette and theme. Hints of blood vessels, intestines and platelets swim through a plasmatic environment like specimens trapped on a microscope slide. This bodily landscape is a contrast to his more literal vistas of years past. WATERSTON expounds on the power of organic forms and ambience to communicate the depths of spirituality. The overwhelming corporality of these works is held in balance by the beauty of his technique and unique vision.
The first monograph of WATERSTON's work will be released in conjunction with this exhibition. Published by St. Ann's Press, this volume includes an essay by Benjamin Weissman and three sonnets by Amy Gerstler as well as 63 color plates and can be purchased for $65. A special slipcased edition of 60 includes a hand-colored etching and is available for $850.
WATERSTON's works are included in distinguished museum collections including the Los Angeles County Museum of Art; Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego; Fresno Art Museum; Long Beach Museum of Art.
