The
Charles Cowles Gallery is pleased to announce The Winter Show, a
group exhibition featuring recent works by gallery artists from January 24
through March 7, 1998. The Gallery is
located at 420 West Broadway between Prince and Spring Streets. The Gallery hours are Tuesday through
Saturday, 10am - 6pm.
David Bates
and Darren Waterston, each of whom had successful one-person shows at
Cowles this past fall, have contributed new paintings, Bates's work is a large
bold still life, Waterston's a bright abstraction. In addition, gallery artists Charles Arnoldi, Stephanie Borns,
Elizabeth Enders, Tom Holland, Doug Martin, and Wilhelm Moser
are exhibiting important and previously unshown paintings. Vernon Fisher, who will be having a
one-person exhibition at the Cowles Gallery in May (which will include his
recent installation from the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth), is displaying
one of his large chalkboard paintings.
Howard Ben Tré, who exhibited his work at Tulane University in
the fall, is represented here by a newly-completed cast glass and lead
sculpture. Manuel Neri, the
subject of two travelling museum retrospectives, has one of his trademark
painted bronze sculptures in The Winter Show.
Enrique
Martinez Celaya, whose work is new to the Gallery, has two powerful
works in the show, a large oil painting and a cast resin sculpture. Hoon Kwak, another new artist to
Cowles who will be exhibiting in the fall, is represented by a substantial oil
and collage abstract painting.
There
are several works by invited non-gallery artists. Paul Laster is showing one of his well known
tape-and-transfer pieces. Peter Alexander
and Daniel Senise, each of whom has a large painting in The Winter
Show, and Alan Saret, with a signature hanging wire sculpture, have
had one-person exhibitions at the Cowles Gallery.
