VERNON
FISHER
Paintings
and Installations
May 2 - May
30, 1998
The
Charles Cowles Gallery is pleased to announce an exhibition of recent paintings
and installations by VERNON FISHER from May 2 through May 30, 1998. The Gallery is located at 420 West Broadway
and the hours are Tuesday through Saturday 10am until 6pm. There will be a reception for the artist on
Saturday, May 2nd, from 5-7pm at the Gallery.
In this
exhibition, VERNON FISHER furthers his dialogue with the viewer by
presenting a wide selection of work created over the last decade. The virtuosity of FISHER's oeuvre
ranges from his sculptural installations to his signature Blackboard
paintings and on to his more recent series of paintings he calls Zombies. A keen observer of the imagery of
contemporary society, FISHER exercises his dry wit, sumptuous rendering,
and meticulous craftsmanship to create works of beauty, intrigue, and
irony. FISHER often combines
painted imagery with text and/or three-dimensional elements. These act as visual metaphors, challenging
viewers to investigate and contemplate the works before them.
Concurrently,
there will be a recent installation, Map 1998, on view at the Miami Art
Museum (May 1st - July 5th), and opening May 23rd will be a one-person
exhibition of VERNON FISHER's Zombies at the Mark Moore
Gallery in Santa Monica, California (310/453-3031).
VERNON
FISHER has work included in major private and public collections including
the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York;
the Art Institute of Chicago; the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden,
Washington, DC; the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; and the Albright-Knox
Museum, Buffalo, NY.
