FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Beatrice Caracciolo
New Works
April 29 - June 3, 2000
The work of Beatrice Caracciolo explores the possibility of line as a record of the expressiveness of motion. Her drawings have been called "compromises between the controlled and the uninhibited," and they indeed combine a refined sensorimotor intelligence with a fearless artistic hand. Caracciolo works with crayon, charcoal and graphite on paper wet with a mixture of glue and pigment. As the surface dries, her gestural lines become fixed to the paper, capturing the immediacy of her drawing method. The resulting calligraphic forms have a seemingly intuitive facility. However, a closer look at the drawings' depth of surface and carefully controlled compositions reveal Caracciolo's extensive formal training and the deliberateness with which she creates her work. In an essay on the artist's work, Donald Kuspit writes:
Her drawings show that there is still hope for art as a vehicle of emotional truth, intimacy, subtlety, and strangeness - as a vehicle of unexpected emotions, stretching the sense of self to its limits.
Far from being simply lines on paper, Caracciolo's completed gestures take on a presence of their own and inhabit the shadowy spaces of her drawings with the same energy that created them.
Beatrice Caracciolo lives and works in Paris where she has previously exhibited. Her work is included in private collections in both Europe and the United States. This is the artist's first solo show with the Charles Cowles Gallery.
The exhibition will be on view at the Charles Cowles Gallery interim location at 74 Grand Street, between Greene and Wooster Streets in SoHo. Hours are 10am to 6pm, Tuesday through Saturday. There will be a reception for the artist on Friday, April 28th, from 6 to 8 pm.
