STEPHANIE
BORNS
New
Paintings
January 31 -
February 26, 1997
The
Charles Cowles Gallery is pleased to announce an exhibition of new paintings by
Stephanie Borns from January 31 through February 26, 1997. The Gallery is located at 420 West Broadway
and the hours are Tuesday through Saturday 10am until 6pm. The artist will be at the Gallery on
Saturday, February 1st, from 4-6pm.
This
will be the first exhibition of work by Stephanie Borns at the Charles
Cowles Gallery. A gifted draftswoman, Borns
renders objects and figures with deft and fluid brushstrokes, and is able to
create powerfully allegoric images utilizing only a simple palette of earth
tones and generally spare compositions.
Borns' work is very introspective and self-referential, inspired
by her decade of work for social justice, her experience in Divinity School,
and her Jewish background. The artist
states of her paintings:
They are visual Midrash,
interpretations of stories that have puzzled and disturbed me
since childhood. At another
level, they are quite contemporary and personal explorations
of vulnerability, suffering and the possibility of transformation. They are about
witnessing and experiencing horror, and still continuing. They ask whether it is possible
to continue; whether it is possible, perhaps, even to transcend.
Stephanie
Borns,
who lives and paints in Boston, has shown her work extensively in the Boston
area. Since 1991, she has exhibited at
the DeCordova Museum, the Fitchburg Museum, the Provincetown Art Center and
Museum, and the Boston Center for the Arts.
Outside of the area, Borns has been shown at the Drawing Center
in New York and Marguerite Oestricher Fine Arts in New Orleans.
