Charles Arnoldi:

New Paintings

October 11 – November 8

In this exhibition CHARLES ARNOLDI confronts the compositional formulas of his last show in New York. From his controlled rectilinear or square compositions of multiple canvases, ARNOLDI shifts into less ordered and unpredictable arrangements of canvases defined by exaggerated horizontal or outright irregular formations.

The fractured ovoid shapes and rich palette of hues found in CHARLES ARNOLDI’s past work remain. However, he now challenges the previous structural limits of compositional form.  ARNOLDI is pushing his own boundaries to redefine the relationship between the painted composition and structural arrangement of the canvases. As a result, the new paintings produce a sense of active play between organic vitality and geometric precision.

ARNOLDI has been the subject of numerous articles, catalogues, and a recent mid-career retrospective in Korea. Over the course of his career, he has repeatedly renewed his artistic approach, progressing from sculptural stick assemblages and chainsawed wooden slabs to the more recent paintings.  These creative shifts have allowed the artist to produce an essential body of work, remarkable both for its formal ingenuity and firm foundation in the dialogue between the natural and the abstract.

ARNOLDI’s works are in distinguished museum collections including the Museum of Modern Art, New York; Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; Guggenheim Bilbao, Spain; Los Angeles County Museum of Art; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; Art Institute of Chicago.

The exhibition will be on view at the Charles Cowles Gallery, 537 West 24th Street, between 10th and 11th Avenues in Chelsea.  Hours are 10am to 6pm, Tuesday through Saturday.  There will be a reception for the artist on Thursday, October 9, from 5-7 pm.
